MENOPAUSE  is the permanent end of Menstruation and fertility, defined as occurring 12 months after your last menstrual period.
Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation due to loss of ovarian follicular function.
The average age at menopause is 51 years.
PERIMENOPAUSE refers to the time period preceding menopause, when fertility wanes and menstrual cycle irregularity increases, until the first year after cessation of menses.
The onset of perimenopause precedes the final menses by 2–8 years, with a mean duration of 4 years.
Smoking accelerates the menopausal transition by 2 years.
Menopause occurs when the egg supply of a woman’s ovaries becomes critically low. As this occurs, the levels of female hormones (Estrogen and Progesterone) produced by the ovaries eventually decrease and decline to negligible levels.
The menopause transition, and postmenopause itself, is a natural life change, not a disease state or a disorder.
Hysterectomy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, primary ovarian failure can also cause menopause.
After menopause, your risk of certain medical conditions increases.
Heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease
Urinary incontinence
Sexual function.
Weight gain. .
Along with your signs and symptoms your doctor will take your medical and surgical history.
You may need hormonal assessment like FSH, Estrogen .
Perimenopause: Treatment
For women with irregular or heavy menses or Hormonally related symptoms that impair quality of life, low-dose combined oral contraceptives are a staple of therapy.
Static doses of Estrogen and Progestin  can eliminate vasomotor symptoms and restore regular cyclicity.
Menopause and Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy
Hormone replacement therapy or HRT  is the use of Estrogen plus Progestin for a woman who has an intact uterus, or Estrogen alone for a woman who has had a Hysterectomy. Traditionally such therapy was provided as tablets but now is available in a range of formulations including skin patches, gels, skin sprays, subcutaneous implants and so forth.
Other medications include
Selective estrogen receptor modulators
Antidepressants - Paroxetine , Fluoxetine hydrochloride , and Venlafaxine hydrochloride have been used with some success in the treatment of hot flashes, improving sleep, mood, and quality of life.
Alternative medicine - Some botanical sources, referred to as phytoestrogens .
Osteoporosis can be minimized by smoking cessation, adequate vitamin D intake and regular weight-bearing  exercise. The Bisphosphate drug Alendronate can help prevent loss of bone mass.
The risk of acute myocardial infarction and other cardiovascular diseases rises sharply after menopause, but the risk can be reduced by managing risk factors, such as tobacco smoking, hypertension, increased blood lipids and body weight..
